Donna Sparkes

Nominated for Nursing Lifetime Achievement Award

Works at Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital

Donna is brilliant in so many ways, but I’m nominating her after seeing her deal with an incredibly challenging child protection case with inspirational professionalism and kindness. She is of course a very experienced nurse, and her clinical knowledge is outstanding, but her core values of care and level-headedness were remarkable and I think the whole team learned from how she worked that day.

Simply put, Donna is an inspiration. Her nursing skills, are admirable. Donna is thorough, trustworthy, reliable, and always advocating and promoting the best quality of care. Donna embodies the core principles and codes from the NMC and RCPCH. Donna is a huge support during the best and worst shifts. Personally she has motivated me to improve on my clinical skills and develop as a nurse. Donna has the very foundations and fundamentals which ensures effective care. She consistently shows dignity, empowers patients and their carers, and is always compassionate towards patients who are distressed, being understanding towards them whilst working in their best interests. Donna works very well in the team, communicates well, and is always willing to help you, whether it be through emotional support, or explaining clinical skills. She is a wealth of knowledge.
I have submitted Donna for both Nursing lifetime achievement, and nursing role model of the year as she is both.

Donna has been working for the NHS for 22 years as a paediatric nurse. Donna is one of the most experienced, knowledgeable and skillful people on the ward. She is confident at working in all areas of the ward including oncology, HDU and PAU. Donna goes above and beyond to provide the highest care possible to the patients and families under her care. Donna always puts her patients/ families and colleagues first. She is an excellent team player and is always happy to help out even during the busiest times. The quality of care she provides is totally outstanding!!
