Maria Cook

Nominated for Nursing Lifetime Achievement Awardd 2021

Works at Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust

Maria continues to astound me. She has worked on Louisa Carey for 40years and her approach to nursing remains phenomenal. She strives to maintain her excellent skills, she is still very keen to learn new things, and is fabulous in allowing other staff to see her vulnerabilities-this is something I admire in a true leader. There have been some very complex and challenging cases on the ward over the last few years and Maria has supported so many of the staff in these times. Maria, I feel honoured to have been able to work with you over the last few years. You deserve recognition for your fantastic previous and ongoing achievements in Torbay.

Maria is a nursing sister on Louisa Cary ward and there could never be a better nursing role model than her. She literally ticks every box when it comes to nursing attributes. She is hugely knowledgeable and a very experienced nurse and is always utilising opportunities to teach her nursing and medical colleagues. She communicates effectively with all members of the MDT and values everyone’s input. She has played a huge role in the development and management of the pHDU and she truly thrives in this environment. There can never be a better advocate for children and their families than Maria, she would not hesitate to do everything in her power to ensure they are given the best care. She’s not adverse to telephoning consultants of all specialities overnight if she is concerned about a patient. She’s certainly a formidable force in these situations, ignore her at your peril! She is so incredibly supportive to all members of the paediatric nursing and medical team and would go above and beyond to ensure the well-being of her colleagues. Maria is truly deserving of this award, she is the most awe-inspiring, empathetic, dedicated nurse I have ever worked with.
