Team from Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust

“As part of the Exeter Local NICU’s firm commitment to enhancing family centred care the Breast Friendly team has been championing breast feeding

This has focussed on parental education, staff training and support , guideline development and achieving a consistent approach.

The work has extended to the midwifery teams, weight loss clinic reviews, improving the hospital environment to support staff and visitor breast feeding and linking in with the lactation support available in primary care.

The multi-disciplinary teams inspiration is led by Charlotte Kilvington, Infant Feeding Coordinator, and the approach stretches across neonatal nursing (Louise Rattenbury, Sarah Backhouse, Claire Cornish and Maxine Thomson), clinical leaders (Sue Prosser, Nigel Osborne) and has been embraced by the RDEs Executive team (Dave Thomas).

The success has been acknowledged by Exeter becoming a Unicef Breast Friendly Hospital in 2015 and recently becoming the 1st neonatal team in the region and 1st Local NICU in the UK to achieve the Unicef Gold Standard.”
