East CAMHS Crisis Resolution & Home Treatment Team
Children Family Health Devon
Owing to the high incidence of mental health problems among young people, the CAMHS Crisis Resolution Team are regular visitors to Bramble Ward. They give each child whatever time they need to make a plan for the next seven days and children comment that they feel ‘heard’. There are no quick fixes for these children but the CAMHS Team help them recognise their potential and, sometimes, see hope for the first time in a long time.
The Team always arrive with enthusiasm and are very interested in what the ward team have got to say about the individual child and family. They take time to talk to us and discuss their assessments and ongoing plans afterwards. They acknowledge the challenges that staff can feel with this patient group and are very supportive. They are happy to help us develop our knowledge of their roles and welcome us to visit and see them in their work environment. They do a tough job with genuine commitment and optimism for these children and are a very strong, professional team.
Bramble HCA Team
Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – EASTERN
Bramble HCA’s have had a challenging couple of years. We have all continued to stick together, support each other as much as possible, and simply be there for when we need someone to talk to. Although we’ve had challenging times, it has identified how strong we are as a team, and our teamwork does not go unrecognised. Bramble HCA’s have many different areas where we always ensure we go above and beyond for, whether this be the OPD which is predominately run by HCA’s only, Bramble Day Case, and Bramble day surgery. As well as working in these areas, we are supporting the nursing staff on the ward, supporting patients with meal supports, maintaining the stock on the ward, and generally keeping the ward tidy, or supporting 1-1 cares for the duration of their shifts. I am proud to be a Bramble HCA, and I will forever be grateful for my team!
Bramble Managers
Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – EASTERN
The Bramble ward has the great privilege have an amazing clinical manager that are here to support us. They contribute to creating a vibrant culture of teamwork and trust among our team.
Bramble Ward
Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – EASTERN
Where do I start! I started working on Bramble a year ago, i have never felt prouder to be apart of a team. The care we provide for children is exceptional, and this is constantly mentioned by patients, children and other teams.
I have been in bramble for three years now. It’s been the best three years of my life. Despite how busy and crazy the ward can get, the bramble team is always there to help and demonstrates teamwork. I know I can always reply on my colleagues through hard shifts. This year has been a hard year for myself, however I have received the best support to better myself. No day in bramble is ever dull, all my colleagues are always full of fun and laughter whilst also being professional in our roles and giving the best care possible. Speaking to university students who have placement in bramble, they have said they have never been included so much and seen a nicer team and I could not agree more. I know I will work in bramble forever. Bramble team works well to include the wider multidisciplinary team such as doctors and other specialists.
Bramble has worked tireless to get the ward more welcoming and inviting for children and young people. It’s always a happy, fast paced environment, but one I’m proud of working in. Everyone always goes above and beyond for their patients. The team work and morale is always on point, there is nowhere else I’d rather work.
Bramble team have worked so hard over the last year to ensure they provide a high level of care and support for patients and their families during a very challenging time. The acuity of patients has risen over the last year and as well staff storages, but Bramble have managed to stay focused and pulled together to ensure patient care is not impacted and are able to continue to offer a high quality of care to everyone who comes through our doors. Bramble is striving to make the ward a nice environment for everyone, with the new corridor being finished, as well as painting the ward to give it a fresh look. Lots of projects are happening behind the scenes and this is shown through dedication of all members of the teams who work on Bramble from patient flow coordinators to the CNMs. There is always lots of opportunities to enhance skills and attend courses, which is really promoted in house. Bramble is such a lovely place to work, the team do lots of out of ward activities to build team morale and within Bramble itself, everyone is so supportive of each other. I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else.
I have had the pleasure of working on Bramble for the past two years. I have never worked in such a welcoming and supportive team. It does not matter what band you are, whether you are a permanent member of staff or an agency worker who has picked up a shift to help us out, we all work together and relieve pressures where possible. Bramble has been through some challenging times over the two years I have worked here, but we have all continued to stick together and ride the wave!
We always continue to advocate for our patients and their families to ensure they are all receiving the cares they require.
I couldn’t be prouder of the team we are, and how we are continuing to grow and develop together.
The team feels like a being part of a big family. Truly amazing.
Clinical Practice Educator Team
Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – EASTERN
Kerry and Nicki are Great Clinical Practice Educator, always available for support and provides great clinical advice to us nurse. They providing a high standard of teaching to trainees also consistently focusses on our wellbeing.
Community Child Health Admin Team
Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – EASTERN
The CCH admin team have worked incredibly hard though some difficult times over the last year. They have pulled together as a team to overcome staff shortages and high levels of work to ensure that children and young people receive safe, timely care. They go out of their way to sort out parental/carer queries and support the clinical team. They are hugely appreciated.
They are the most fabulous example of a team that pulls together and supports each other through challenging times. The team manage a huge workload which involves a high level of stress and communication skills. They interact with the MDT, parents, medics and other professional bodies on a daily basis. They manage this high workload with enthusiasm, laughter and a very high level of professionalism. They support the medical team so amazingly well and without them the department simply would not function! They are the backbone of our community paediatric service and deserve to be celebrated so highly. We are beyond grateful for all that they do. They are true unsung hero’s. Thank you Team CCH!
Three members of the team left and then the staff freeze was put in place and my team worked tirelessly to maintain the service for patients and staff. They have been put under extreme pressure and yet have always managed to maintain a positive attitude.
They have continuously worked extra hours to ensure the families of our patients are provided with an outstanding service and that the clinicians are provided with everything they need.
Nothing is ever too much trouble for the team, they go above and beyond every single day.
They face each challenge with a positive attitude and provide each other with an abundance of support.
Being unable to replace the staff members that we lost caused a great increase in an already busy workload and they handled it without any loss of service to our patients and their families.
There must have been many times that they felt it was too much to deal with but they never brought this into the office, they maintained staff morale and I am exceptionally proud of how they rose to this situation.
Neonatal Unit
Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – EASTERN
An absolutely fantastic team to be a part of – everyone works so well together, supporting and learning from eachother and continually advocating for our patients and providing the highest quality of neonatal care. I wouldn’t want to work with any other team.
Newborn hearing screening team
Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – EASTERN
I nominate the newborn hearing screening team, because they are always so readily available and enthusiastic about their work.
They come to unit and screen babies efficiently and before discharge to ensure that families on the unit can achieve another milestone before going home.
Often the families on the unit have been through so much throughout their admission, and any test can induce anxiety, but the ladies in the team are always so approachable, understanding, and empathetic with the families and we have only ever been given great feedback.
They are great at communicating with staff on the unit to ensure they come at a time which is convenient for the families and staff, and doing so before discharge enables the team to complete a full and thorough discharge for babies before they go home.
In some occasions, babies in the unit have been referred to audiology, when this has happened in the past, the team has always been very clear and empathetic with families and always ensure they are efficient in completing the referrals and will arrange appointments which are convenient and suitable for the families and the unit if the baby is still an inpatient.
We appreciate the team, and them coming into the unit has definitely reduced the strain on the team because it means they no longer need to complete it themselves.
NNU HCAs (Band 3 & 4s)
Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – EASTERN
Exeter NNU would be completely lost without this team of wonderful HCAs and Nursing Associates. Frequently having to work under pressure with large clinical workloads the team are unflappable. Their collective knowledge and experience mean that the babies they look after receive exceptional care. Parents are well supported and they continually advocate for their tiny patients. In challenging situations or when other team members are pulled away for emergencies they consistently work so beautifully together to ensure everyone is supported and all clinical needs are met, without even having to ask. A total pleasure to work with.

Caroline Thorpe Ward
Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – NORTHERN
The team on Caroline Thorpe have been through a lot of change and struggle over the last year but have pushed through as a team never loosing site of the most important thing, the patients. Patients are at the heart of every change, decision and thought on the ward and how we can improve patient care so that it is as optimum as it can be.
Caroline Thorpe is a wonderful place to work. The small yet close knit team work incredibly well together and there is an unbeatable atmosphere of a workplace family. Working with the team I was inspired by so many individuals but also how well they are able to come together to support patients. There are times when Ive been amazed at the number of patients and the acuity of the workload on Caroline Thorpe Ward but more so by the way the team take this in their stride and do their best for the patients.
Simply the best team. An amazing work family. There for each other and help and support at all times .Though they may be little they are mighty! The team provides a wide range of care from acute oncology emergencies, to mental health support, to high dependancy care. The nursing and medical team constantly strive to provide the best care possible and provide a safe environment and trusting environment. Often families that have had stays in tertiary centres and then step-down into their care quote ‘Oh it’s so good to be back home with you guys’. The ward provides a real community feel to long-term patients being that friendly face in people’s time of needs. They work well throughout the hospital going to resus calls in A&E, working in ITU and helping with SCBU. When faced with challenging patients the team pulls together to navigate the difficulties and keep morale up.

Special Care Baby Unit
Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – NORTHERN
SCBU is a little team with a great big heart! Working tirelessly to ensure the very best outcomes for the babies and families that are cared for on the unit. A supportive, caring and compassionate team that work extremely well together.
The SCBU team are nothing short of amazing. This has been a challenging year for them staffing wise and they have all stepped up to the mark to help out when shifts need covered, and when instructed, have even covered shifts on the children’s ward when they are short staffed. The care they provide to the babies and families is excellent and they will always try to find time to make sure the families are as comfortable as possible while spending time on the unit. They always look after and support one another and are a fabulous bunch of people to work with.
A true team working environment, not only supporting each other consistently but also including parents and infants, making the unit feel like a relaxed but safe space in first steps of parenting.
The staff at SCBU are just incredible and the embodiment of what it means to be a team. They have faced many challenges over the last year with long term sickness and low staff numbers, and the way they have pulled together and supported each other is just amazing. Swapping shifts, covering at short notice and just generally being there for each other. All of this while maintaining the highest possible professional standards and care. Nothing is too much trouble and they go above and beyond for the patients and their families to make their stay with us more bearable during a very stressful time.
I am in awe of every single staff member for their dedication and commitment, and am very proud to work in this team.

They have embraced the newly introduced Paediatric Phlebotomy Service, which has proved invaluable with inpatient care. The CYPOD team are enthusiastic, look out for each other and often offer suggestions to improve the outpatient service.

This team!!! No matter how hard the day, how stressful the shift…..I know that this team will have my back and support me every step of the way. As a team they don’t fall apart when the going gets tough, they pull together and stand stronger.
This team not only works well together but they strongly advocate for their patients to not only ensure they get the best person centred care but also to advocate for their needs with other members of the MDT and social care to improve the care given.
This year more focus has been put on team debriefs when needed and Mental Health supervision sessions once a month, by being able to better support the teams wellbeing with this we are also working much more closely with our Camhs colleagues and the Medical teams are getting involved so that they can have a better understanding of the challenges faced on the acute ward with Mental Health patients.
This team is not just the nurses, it is a wonderful supportive manager, consultants and Registrars who strive for the best for the patients, HCA’s who are passionate and caring, domestic staff who know the ward inside out, ward clarks who go above and beyond, play specialists who bring fun and creativity and a vast number of other MDT members who just make this team amazing.

Wildgoose team have dealt with the increase in patients admitted in mental health crisis and suffering from eating disorders. The Team are amazing at supporting new staff, preceptee’s and student nurses/paramedics and have recently received positive feedback around the support and learning opportunities the team provide.

I am so grateful to be part of this Wildgoose family and thank everyone who has helped me settle and thoroughly enjoy working there the last 4 years.
Wildgoose Ward is often known across level 12 as a tricky ward to work on. We look after patients with a large mix of conditions which can sometimes be difficult but also very rewarding. Our staff support each other in a way that I have not seen elsewhere with both professional and personal matters. Our work often involves having to fight and advocate for those who cannot do so themselves. We have had many difficult times but we come together well every time to provide the best care possible. All staff members attend MDT’s to liaise with different professionals to ensure continuity of care and to provide timely and safe discharges. Our team is widely known across level 12 as the most nurturing to newly qualified nurses and the most supportive team, which is why I believe we deserve this nomination.
Wildgoose Ward is the definition of the word team. We all have a common goal which is to provide the best care for our patients and families and to do that we have to work together. Laura is our amazing manager who leads and supports the team, advocating for us when the ward has been challenging, helping clinically and boosting moral at times too. All our band 6 nurses bring experience, confidence and a willingness to teach and develop their skills to benift others. We have good communication skills and a mutual respect for each other. We also enjoy social events which help build positive relationships.
Love being part of Team Goose!
We are a ward that are incredibly supportive of each other from domestic staff right up to ward manager .. the past several years have been incredibly hard . We have have extreme circumstances that have pushed staff to their limits , meaning that we have had to rely on each other , be there to support , protect , defend each other when situations have become overwhelming . We have developed a close bond , and we meet problems together . We check up on each other . And whenever we can we enjoy having a good laugh together . Can’t imagine working with any other team
Woodcock
University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust
Woodcock ward are the epitomy and definition of the word team. They all look after each other better than I have ever seen of any team, in good times and bad. They work together cohesively and respectfully. Civility is key on Woodcock and every member of the team promotes civility and respect. Woodcock team show determination and resilience everyday working in a very highly stressful, ever changing environment and always with a smile on their faces.
If you’re looking for a more deserved winner, you won’t find one aside of Woodcock ward. It is a blessing every day to come in and work with such an amazing, positive, beautiful (inside and out) team. Regardless of the votes, Woodcock is already a winning team in my eyes as they are winning at providing an excellent, safe, effective environment for patients, their families and each other. The care they provide is outstanding, alongside being great people. I want them all to read what a wonderful team they are and how truly happy I am to be a part of this team.

Louisa Carey Nursing Team
Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust
I have worked with this group of nurses over a number of years. I know them to be dedicated, hard working, empathetic and kind to all patients and families under their care. But this last year they have been utility exceptional. Nursing can always be challenging, but rarely more so than looking after young people with disordered eating. We have had unprecedented numbers of young people needing our care in this area. Leading to huge pressures on the nursing staff. At all times they have been professional, hardworking, dedicated and caring to our young people in this situation.
Despite high levels of patients sectioned and requiring safe holds. Consistently and warmly put patients and families cited excellent nursing care. Innovative in approach’s to an Individuals needs, inclusive to any underlying difficulty and showing a leading example to how this patients with the right care can make it back into the community. Whilst (most of the time, we are all human!) smiling and being amazing natured about it. Every time you had to you worked through what needed to be done to save those young people’s lives, and they were massively thankful for it. As am I.

The team within Torbay emergency department paediatric area have had a difficult few years with lots of changes of senior staff, team sickness, relocations of the area, working in areas not fit for purpose and the usual challenges that face all teams working in acute and emergency care. However, despite all of these challenges the team have continued to do their absolute best to advocate for their patients and their families and provide an exceptional level of care. This is demonstrated by almost daily positive social media compliments from parents highlighting the level of care and compassion from the staff towards both the children and their families as well as frequent compliments being sent directly to the area and the exec team. The team now beginning to find themselves in a more stable place and are making huge progress in teaching, training, safety and resilience and have great plans for the future. It is inspiring to see a team who despite so many challenges remain upbeat and positive in their desire to make emergency care for children the best it can be.
Torbay Paediatric ED nurses share a common goal to provide the highest quality of care to the patients.
Internal teamworking: Nurses have their own work stream to improve the care provided; mental health lead, feedback lead, sharing best practice . The team have moved into a new environment, taking on new working processes, Band 6 nurses taking on more of a oversight managerial role, requiring closer working with adult nursing lead, embracing change. The team demonstrate exceptional teamworking; regular huddles to ensure continuity of care, communicating ideas to improve services such as introducing prepared grab boxes (seizures, DKA, sepsis) and the flow of CAMHS patients via early referrals if medically suitable on admission.
Interaction with MDT: They strive to improve working relationships with the children’s ward, enabling ward nursing staff to experience shifts in Paeds A&E to become more familiar with each other but also to encourage awareness for the ward of the procedures and stressors of the department. Adult staff receive supernumerary support from nursing staff to ensure a competent flexible workforce to improve the service that we can provide to CYP and parents. The team model exceptional interaction with wider MDT, for example early referral to specialities, also advocating for the right care for the patient.
Advocates and improves care: Led by a passionate band 7 lead who is proactively working with other seniors within the hospital to make change, nurses advocate in an environment where they are often the paediatric expert, working with junior doctors who may be inexperienced in paediatric care, advising them of policies or procedures. Nursing skills have been developed to support medical staff such as PGD of salbutamol and auscultation of chests but also to initiate treatment early for patients to enable timely care.”
“Over the last few years this team has experienced a lot of challenges and changes. But the team comes together naturally and support each other constantly. The team work together to enhance the department and are all extremely passionate. The goal of the team is to enhance the department for the benefit of the patients and their families.
I have been welcomed into the team and I’m really proud to be part of the paeds ED family.
Since the many changes in the emergency department, the team look to be endlessly thriving. Each member of the team have been doing their part to ensure that they not only deliver the best care possible, they have been working to make improvements to the department and the general experiences of patients and their families. There have been many compliments by both patients and other teams to the positive changes that have been made, and I look forward to see what they do next.

Torbay Paediatric Team
Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust
Such a welcoming and positive team. Torbay Paediatrics and Neonates is full of excellent, friendly and inspiring people that go about their daily job not realising how lovely they are. They advocate for their CYP and really want to improve their care. it is a team that work in an area with multiple challenges for example high levels of social deprivation and safeguarding and then a huge number of holiday makers. There are also a large number of non trainees on the rota which makes for a top heavy approach to supervision yet the consultants always seem to be approachable and friendly despite the extra work load. The MDT whilst understaffed are always keen to help. Torbay is a team full of helpful and friendly people who give so much to their department and CYP.
Torbay Security Team
Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust
This nomination is for the amazing security team at Torbay Hospital.
We have faced a number of extremely challenging situations on the children’s ward in recent years, but particularly 2024.
The security team have gone above and beyond any description within their roles to keep our children and young people safe.
This has included flexing and overlapping their shifts so that there were sufficient numbers to support the ward at specific times.
Their professionalism and skill has been astounding. But far more importantly they have managed each and every challenging situation with compassion and kindness. This has been noted by children, their families, ward staff and the CQC on an unannounced visit.
The interactions between security and a children’s ward are often traumatic for everyone involved, but they have universally impressed us and are hugely valued. Thank you for your hard work, talent, and above all compassion for young people in the worst kinds of distress.
