These junior nurses (qualified less than 2 years) were recognised by our committee for having shown particularly outstanding team work, personal development and promise.

Kiera Coath

Works at University Hospitals Plymouth

Kiera consistently goes above and beyond for her patients and families, building trust quickly and ensuring a safe and effective journey through the emergency department.

She has made an impressive start to her nursing career, bringing compassion, enthusiasm and positivity to every shift. She actively seeks learning opportunities and approaches every situation with kindness and patience.

Kiera is developing excellent clinical awareness and escalates concerns appropriately. She is reliable, thoughtful and contributes greatly to the smooth running of the ward.

Kiera joined the Emergency Department as a newly qualified nurse only a year ago yet already demonstrates professionalism, strong clinical thinking and calmness under pressure. She is loved by colleagues and patients alike.

Her exceptional advocacy for children and families, commitment to learning and leadership potential make her a truly deserving nominee.

Alice Greaves

Works at Torbay & South Devon

Alice is an absolutely fantastic nurse who places patient care at the centre of her priorities. She demonstrates excellent knowledge of the patients she cares for and consistently works efficiently while maintaining high standards.

She manages acutely unwell patients extremely well and escalates concerns appropriately. A memorable example was when she cared for two critically unwell two-week-old twins overnight, playing a vital role in investigations, infusions and monitoring.

Alice shows excellent teamwork with the medical team and other healthcare professionals. Most importantly she is an exceptional advocate for her patients and their families, ensuring concerns are heard and addressed.

Niamh Guppy

Works at Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital

Niamh is an outstanding junior nurse and a fantastic asset to Bramble Ward. She remains calm, focused and confident even when things are busy.

Having worked as a healthcare assistant before training as a nurse, she brings a broad skillset that allows her to perform beyond her years of experience.

Niamh is kind, caring and professional. She is a strong advocate for her patients and always works in their best interests while seeking support appropriately.

She actively develops her skills and has shown a keen interest in HDU and oncology, demonstrating great potential in both areas.

Niamh also shows natural leadership qualities, supporting colleagues and students and helping newly qualified staff. She would make an incredible Band 6 in the future.

Yasmin Hookway

Works at University Hospitals Plymouth

Yasmin shows exceptional dedication to advocating for children and families. She ensures their voices are heard and that they feel supported and respected.

She embraces learning opportunities and quickly applies new knowledge to her practice, growing in confidence and competence each day.

Yasmin has demonstrated early leadership potential and has stepped up as nurse in charge on several occasions, showing calmness and confidence under pressure in a busy emergency department.

She works seamlessly within the multidisciplinary team and supports students and new staff with patience and kindness.

Her compassion, professionalism and teamwork make her a wonderful role model and a deserving nominee.

Elise May

Works at University Hospitals Plymouth

Elise consistently demonstrates outstanding advocacy for children and families, ensuring every voice is heard and every family feels supported and informed.

Although newly qualified, Elise has shown remarkable professional growth. She actively seeks learning opportunities and demonstrates strong leadership qualities while remaining calm in busy clinical environments.

She communicates exceptionally well and works brilliantly within the multidisciplinary team, delivering collaborative and patient-centred care.

Elise has strong clinical instincts, particularly in recognising when a child is unwell and escalating concerns quickly and appropriately.

She is also deeply supportive of her colleagues, often checking in on team wellbeing and helping to maintain a positive environment within the department.

Elise has become an invaluable member of the Paediatric ED team and embodies the principles of nursing practice through compassion, professionalism and dedication.

Helen Shelley

Works at Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital

Helen has made a wonderful start to her nursing career, quickly settling into her role with kindness, dedication and compassion.

She is an exceptional advocate for children and families, ensuring they feel heard, supported and respected during difficult times.

Helen actively seeks opportunities to learn and develop, reflecting on her practice and building her clinical skills with enthusiasm.

She has also shown promising leadership qualities through her initiative and collaborative approach within the multidisciplinary team.

Paediatric Junior Hero – Shortlist

These Core Paediatric Speciality Trainees (ST1-4) and other Resident Doctors at Foundation, GP, or Trust SHO level were recognised by our committee for having shown particularly outstanding promise, ability and teamwork

Dr Alicia Boam

Lissie is such a positive person to have around. She is incredibly hard working and her communication skills with children are exemplary. She builds strong relationships with families and demonstrates an impressive knowledge base with every patient she sees.

She has taken on the weekly teaching programme and spent many hours developing and improving it for the benefit of the whole team.

Alicia consistently demonstrates excellence in her work within paediatrics, going above and beyond for every child and family. Even during the busiest shifts she remains positive, compassionate and supportive to those around her.

She embodies professionalism, kindness and teamwork, making her a valued and respected member of the team whose presence uplifts everyone around her.

Dr Sam Chun

Sam is the kind of colleague everyone feels lucky to have on shift. He is endlessly supportive, generous with his knowledge, and always willing to help others. His approach to teaching and supporting colleagues lifts the entire team.

He communicates exceptionally well with children and families, always taking time to explain things clearly and compassionately. Families feel reassured by his calm and thoughtful presence.

Sam’s clinical knowledge is outstanding and applied with insight even in complex situations. Colleagues feel confident and supported when he is on shift.

He consistently demonstrates kindness, respect and integrity while advocating strongly for children and families. His contribution to the department and the wider paediatric team is invaluable.

Dr Matt Cotton

Matt is one of the most uplifting and encouraging doctors to work alongside. He provides exceptional care to patients and families while also supporting and empowering the nursing and healthcare assistant teams.

He consistently goes above and beyond in his role and is always willing to help colleagues or provide teaching when needed.

Matt communicates brilliantly with children and families, ensuring they feel listened to and reassured. His kindness, compassion and professionalism shine through in every interaction.

He embodies the values of integrity, respect, excellence and collaboration and is an outstanding role model for the whole team.

Dr Liam Craddock

Liam is highly respected by the clinical team for his kind, considerate and approachable nature. He always considers how his management plans affect the wider team and supports nursing staff whenever needed.

He has a calming presence with parents and young people, helping them feel reassured and confident in the care they receive.

Liam demonstrates strong initiative on the wards and manages patient flow effectively while maintaining excellent standards of care.

He willingly shares his knowledge with colleagues and students and can be trusted to lead safely when senior staff are unavailable. His professionalism and clinical skills make him an invaluable member of the team.

Dr Jena Hopkins

Jena is an exceptional registrar who consistently demonstrates thorough clinical assessment and well-reasoned management plans for acutely unwell children.

She is highly respected by both nursing and medical colleagues and is known for her supportive and approachable manner.

Jena is also a fantastic educator who takes every opportunity to teach and share knowledge with the wider team.

Her compassion, professionalism and excellent communication ensure that children and families always feel informed, reassured and supported during their care.

Dr Shanvanth Jonnalagadda

Shan is a wonderful colleague who brings calmness, kindness and diligence to every shift. His approach to patients, families and colleagues is thoughtful and reassuring.

He has quickly made a fantastic impression on the nursing team, who frequently praise his knowledge, professionalism and friendly nature.

Shan’s calm leadership empowers others to contribute their thoughts on patient care and helps the team feel confident and supported.

His passion for evidence-based care, curiosity for learning and commitment to keeping the child at the centre of everything he does make him an outstanding paediatric doctor.
