Hayley has worked as a paediatric nurse in our hospital for many years, working split time between the paediatric ward and the critical care unit. She is so supportive of junior colleagues and the most amazing educator. She was the first nurses to teach on the APLS course at our hospital over 20 years ago and continues to teach this regularly. She is also a director on our PLS course which she does in her own time. Hayley says the reason she does these courses is to keep herself up to date, as no matter how long she has been teaching, she always learns something new. The biggest reason she gives up her time to teach and maintain her knowledge is for her patients, making sure that she and those she teaches are as prepared as possible when managing a sick child. She is such a caring nurse and a huge advocate for her patients receiving the best care possible. Hayley will always speak up if things are not right and encourages others to do so too. There is not a Consultant, resident doctor, or member of nursing staff in this hospital who wouldn’t be relieved to see Hayley there at a paediatric emergency call. She is very thorough, and asks if she is ever unsure. She is a team player, constantly seeing if anyone needs help, checking in on other staff members and ensuring she acts as a role mode for students and new nurses. Merril Emberson
Works at Royal Cornwall Hospitals
Now, we’ve all experienced a ‘Merril Monday’…. lovely Merril has unfortunately garnered a rep as a magnet for troublesome shifts! However, she handles these with all the leadership, compassion, advocacy and considered decision-making skills that you’d expect from a quality nurse in charge. She nurses our patients with a respect, compassion and pragmatism that ensures efficient, quality care, and has no problem discussing or escalating concerns to the wider team thereby supporting medics in their work. Merril has also taken on the professional nurse advocate role, providing debriefing and supervision which has undoubtedly been of huge benefit to the team and supported many of them following difficult clinical situations. It’s a relief to walk in and see Merril at the helm of a shift- we always know it’ll be a fun one (and probably a busy one too!) but we’re reassured the unit is in safe hands.

As an experienced member of the Bramble team, she inspires others through her commitment to delivering the highest standard of patient care and her unwavering advocacy for patients and their families. Her passion for nursing shines through in everything she does, motivating colleagues to strive for excellence and embody the same patient-centred approach. Emma is primarily a HDU nurse and uses her advanced skills to support and educate her peers, ensuring that complex patient care is delivered safely and confidently. She is always eager to share her knowledge, taking every opportunity to teach and mentor others, whether formally during training sessions or informally on the ward. Her approachable yet firm nature makes her an excellent teacher and role model for both new and experienced staff. Emma is known for her strong presence and reputation as a “tough nurse,” but this strength stems from her deep care for her patients, their families, and her colleagues. She sets high standards because she genuinely wants the best for everyone around her and ensures that care is always delivered safely, compassionately, and effectively. In her leadership role, Emma frequently takes charge of the ward and leads the Band 5 meetings, using them as a platform to drive improvements in ward culture, communication, and patient experience. With many years of experience on Bramble, Emma’s knowledge, reliability, and dedication make her a true nursing role model.
Emma is a hugely important member of the nursing team on Bramble. She is clinically versatile, able to slot in to so many areas, dealing with any number of patient needs, and she does so with great competence and humility. As well as being able to deliver excellent patient care, Emma is a wonderful resource to other members of the nursing team, always willing to advise, discuss and evaluate care with qualified and student members of the team.
Emma brings a positive temperament to the ward, ensuring that care is appropriately delivered on every occasion. Emma is always advocating for her patients whether they are in HDU, PAU or on the inpatient ward.
Emma you are amazing, it is an absolute privilege to work alongside you on Bramble.
Emma is one of those nurses who takes everything in her stride, her little home is in hdu where she excels! Emma will often take the bleep and take charge as a 5, and recently had a very difficult shift where she managed admirably. Every single member of that shift has fed back about how supportive she was and how they could not have coped without her. Emma facilities meetings for all staff band 5 and below, ensuring she actions anything that has arisen and takes it forward to senior management. She is a locked box when it comes to staff confidentiality and as a result lots of people go to her with any problems or issues. Emma is a fierce advocate for her patients and staff and is not afraid to say no when it’s something she doesn’t believe is right. Emma loves teaching and will always use any moment to provide support and provide a teaching session. Emma supports all staff well and is more than happy to help everyone from hcas to doctors to do their role. Whether she is coordinating staffing, supporting families, leading by example on the floor, or quietly picking up countless unseen tasks, she does it with humility and a deep sense of responsibility to her team and the babies in her care.

Becky advocates for every child she comes across. she can lift moods in the department, keeping the rest of us going with her top-tier banter and that signature humour that can turn a night shift meltdown into full-blown laughter. Her “mood” phases are legendary, but even when she’s rolling her eyes at the chaos, she’s still the one holding the place down, making sure everyone is cared for.
Becky can explain complex situations in a supportive and approachable way. Even when she’s hangry, she keeps us all motivated. She takes time to mentor junior nurses like myself, helping us feel confident and capable from day one. She trusts her team, gives honest and constructive feedback-sometimes brutally funny and somehow always knows when a Subway run is needed to save morale.
she is always ready to step in when help is needed. Her reliability and initiative make her someone both the nursing and medical teams can count on without hesitation. She truly has everyone’s backs. you’ll hardly see anyone panic when she’s on, she’s supportive and gently herds us all in the right direction!
Her advocacy, and commitment to children make her an outstanding nurse and a role model for others. Her humour keeps morale high, her empathy keeps us grounded, and her passion for paediatrics reminds us all why we do what we do. She’s the glue, the laughter, and the energy that makes this team feel like a family.

Chloe Williams
Works at Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital
Exceptional nursing care and support with Lactation and breastfeeding. Chloe supports mothers and families with establishing a breast milk supply through expressing and to establish breast feeding. She is an advocate for mothers, ensuring they are supported to meet their own feeding goals, her knowledge and passion about the importance of breastfeeding for health and wellbeing is an inspiration for other staff.
Her specialist knowledge is shared through update training, and working alongside others, who learn by observing her practice.
Chloe took it upon herself to set up a weekly Infant feeding drop in group, for families. The group has gone from strength to strength and has been running for > 1 year. At the group she supports and teaches Mums on aspects of infant feeding, and the importance of developing a close and loving relationship. The group is relaxed and well attended, with families looking forward to attending each week. As well as supporting with all things infant feeding, the group provides a social platform for parents on the neonatal unit to meet and chat with others, so it provides a peer support network, which actively reduces parental stress, and helps the unit to feel like home, during a baby’s admission.
Chloe is constantly striving to improve her knowledge and skills. She qualified as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), in July 2024, a rigorous qualification. Her passion to support Mothers to breastfeed and to understand why this matters shines to inspire others.
She also completes UNICEF Baby friendly maternal audits, to support the ward matrons to maintain the prestigious UNICEF BFI Gold award.
Here’s just one of many feedbacks from a Mum, “Chloe’s help and advice has been priceless. At the group I met other Mums in a similar position, and I felt less alone.”
