Glenda Apilado
Works at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – EASTERN
Glenda demonstrates excellent knowledge of equipment and practical procedures on NNU. She frequently teaches and helps out the MDT with practical technique and procedures. She is fantastic in an emergency, promoting a calm and productive environment enabling the team to deal with the situation. In a recent secondment as a Band 6 she showed great team leadership and I hope she obtains a permanent post in the future.
I have worked with Glenda quite a bit this year when she has been in charge of the unit. These shifts are calm and organised, and Glenda is always really proactive in looking after her team. We had a particularly busy shift with loads transfers and she was unruffled. She is a real team player and pleasure to work with. She also happens to be extraordinarily talented at inserting neonatal cannulas! I have been grateful to her for this on so many occasions. I want her to know how much she is appreciated

Melodie Ashman
Works at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – EASTERN
Mel has recently has been promoted to a band 6 sister role on Bramble, a position she was made for. She is a font of knowledge, a keen teacher and always so upbeat and every day is a school day with Mel. Having recently gone maternity leave, you can notice that Mel isn’t there as she is such a staple to Bramble team. Mel has always super organised and being a band 6, was always on her cards. In the few months that she was in the role before becoming a first-time mum, it was truly where she flourished. Mel has always had a great working relationship as a nurse and now sister with the multidisciplinary teams, I think everyone knows her as she is such an approachable person and her knowledge of EPIC, is like no one I’ve ever met. Mel is such an inspirational sister, she always goes above and beyond for patients and for her colleagues. A natural leader and matter how busy it is, Mel always makes time to ensure patient safety, staff well-being and gives her all to teaching. Mel has such a calming nature about her, added in with great organisational skills and able to take control of any situations with such ease. Mel has had some really tough shifts over the past year, but takes everything in her stride and ensures fellow colleagues are cared for and checked on. Mel’s advocacy for patients and families is second to none. Regular patients still ask about her now, even though she has been off for a few months, which is a dedication to her character and ability to provide excellent care. Nothing ever seems like too much trouble for her, staff, patients and families all love her, and she always strives to give her best. Hurry up and come back, we miss you. **As Mel is on Maternity leave her NHS email is deactivated, I’ve used her personal email so she gets the nomination by email**

Holly is a kind, compassionate and caring nurse who has always worked to the highest possible standard of nursing care. Holly has been an excellent addition to the senior nursing team!
Holly has been a nurse on Bramble for a number of years, and this year she pushed herself and took on a new role of a band 6 Sister. She is thriving at this role. With a truly positive attitude and enthusiasm, you can see she was made to be a sister. Holly is always so happy, friendly and approachable on the ward. She has a drive to help make changes to positively impact the team and the ward, and this is shown with the work she has already undertaken and is willing to take on. She has an active presence whenever on shift, ensuring she is visible to all staff, patients and families, offering support to all bramble and MDT teams. Holly is advocate for patients and families, as well as her colleagues. Some shifts are crazy busy, and with the acuity and challenges that come with a paediatric ward, Holly never lets that show, she is dedicated to ensuring patient care is not impacted as well as staff well-being. Holly truly is an all-round role model. She often picks up extra shifts or swaps shifts last minute to ensure the ward is staffed with a Co-Ordinator, as some shifts are very junior and the supports she gives each and everyone does not go unnoticed. Holly is amazing at teaching others and strives to ensure that people are happy and confident within their own roles, offering learning opportunities all the time. Its invaluable the support she offers to everyone and I don’t think Holly realises the impact she has had on everyone. It has been a joy to see Holly progression over the last few months, seeing her thrive at becoming a sister. Thanks Holly for all your support and congratulations on bossing being a sister, you truly are outstanding at the role.
Holly is an incredible nurse who always aims to do her best at work and give patients the best care possible. She is kind and empathetic with all her patients and is a great advocate for them. Faye Drinkwater
Works at Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust
It’s baffling to me that Faye has not won this award multiple times. She is an absolutely inspirational Eating Disorder Specialist Nurse who works in Torbay.
Faye has enormous clinical knowledge and technical skill which spans her community patients and the increasing numbers we have seen on the ward. She is a constant presence and support for clinical staff on the ward (nursing and medical) and goes above and beyond every day for her patients and their families.
She is kind and generous with her time, regardless of who is asking, but it is humbling to see her compassion and determined support for some of the most challenging patients we have to deal with. She is a fantastic advocate for young people and their families and is not afraid to hold the medical team to account if they have shied away from a difficult conversation or task.
She has spearheaded many of the developments on the ward to support and educate the wider team about disordered eating and has been instrumental in the development and improvements within the service alongside Dr Childs.
She knows we can do better for these young people and is determined to see it done. She combines this with saintly patience and a positive and proactive attitude.
We would be absolutely lost without Faye’s skill, kindness, dedication and sheer hard graft. Thank you so much for everything you do.

Emily is truly dedicated to her role, and will stay late to ensure she has handed over as much information as possible. Emily seeks new opportunities, and ensures her knowledge and training skills are kept up to date. Emily is always on hand to support the NQN, and Dr’s.
Emily, you are an absolute credit. You deserve to know how fabulous you are, and how much you are appreciated. Keep smiling, and being you 🙂
Emily is an excellent hands-on nurse who enjoys delivering direct patient care. She is very professional and supportive to families and has great empathy for the challenges that hospitalisation causes. She demonstrates kindness and sensitivity to parents who are upset by medical procedures and intuitively acts to reduce their trauma and anxiety.
Emily is a supportive work colleague and shows consideration and respect to those around her. She takes her role as a supervisor to students very seriously and does her best to recognise and build on positive attributes.
She has courage in highlighting issues of concern, acknowledging her commitment to the NMC Code, and always tries to broach difficult issues with sensitivity.
Emily doesn’t always recognise the valuable contribution she makes to team camaraderie. She is a team player and a positive role model.
Emily is hard working, compassionate and empathetic. She is not afraid to voice her concerns and advocate for her patients which is hugely admirable. She is supportive towards newly qualified nurses, as well as paediatric doctors rotating onto the children’s ward. I had my first shift on PAU with Emily. I really appreciated how she took my under her wing and looked after me during what was a very stressful time for me. She is always checking on the wellbeing of her colleagues which just exemplifies her kind and caring nature. Bramble ward are lucky to have her!

Gemma Hayes
Works at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – NORTHERN
Gemma is the epitome of Nurse goals! She is that person we all strive to be even half as good as. Throughout my time on the ward I have seen Gemma progress from band 5 to 6 and now our ward manager so She gets what it’s like to be a nurse at all different levels and works in partnership with you. Not only does she advocate for her colleagues but also patients and their families and is well respected with her firm but fair manner with the wider multidisciplinary team. She really listens to families views and implements positive changes in our practice to improve experiences.
She’s recently worked immensely hard to improve aftercare for families who have experienced childhood death after finding holes in the previous pathways. She’s inputted a lot of time and energy into staff education and creating bonds and resources with the bereavement team and wider charities. This has helped the family with their grief journey knowing their loss has lead to improved outcomes for others and enabled staff to feel empowered navigating such a delicate time and alleviated some fears. Gemma is an excellent educator with her non-judgemental and supportive manner and adapts for individuals learning needs. She’s helped me incredibly through navigating a difficult practice assessor placement and gave up her Saturday evening to support a meeting with the student. She fully embodies all the qualities it takes to be an amazing nurse.
Gemma leads by example and you always know when she’s done a clinical shift as you could eat off any surface on the ward! It’s sparkly clean. She’s always on the end of the phone whenever you need her and you bet she will come in to be right there beside you when it hits the fan. We owe a lot to Gemma for making our ward a lovely place to work and having such an amazing ward manager.

Rosie Houston
Works at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – EASTERN
Rosie is always working to improve the care provided on our unit. She has been pivotal in the implementation of ‘the cuddle bundle’. She is a great advocate for family centred care. She identifies a learning need on the unit and implements learning tools for nursing and medical staff, such as her arterial line set up sheet. She organises an annual sponsored team building trip which excellent at strengthening team bonds and unit morale. She is a strong advocate of baby, parent and staff wellbeing.
Rosie 100% deserves this award. She is so passionate about her role that she puts far too much of her own time and money into ensuring that her team are supported and her families are provided with the best possible care. She strongly believes in the great impact of good developmental care on babies lives and she loves teaching the importance of it to the wider team. At the very least, she is involved in the cuddle bundle project, baby friendly initiative, promoting the use of early breastmilk and wraps for skin to skin, teaches baby massage and is a band 6 nurse in charge. She spends much of her spare time creating posters and other communications for the above projects. She also takes it upon herself to bake something for almost every shift she works. Her sweet treats boost morale and make us feel looked after and appreciated. She will always check in with us throughout the shift to make sure our workload is not too heavy and will willingly do nursing tasks for us to help take the pressure off. She is a great mentor and will help her juniors to work through any issues they may be having in a caring and compassionate way. She is genuine and kind and is a great role model to all.
I have to nominate Rosie. I have never worked with anyone with quite so much energy and passion for neonatal nursing or who can achieve so much with her time. Rosie is committed to the care of babies and families. She has gone above an beyond over the last few years, including her project to implement cuddle wraps to facilitate kangaroo care on NNU, her recent project looking at parent attitudes towards discharge home and her guidelines and resources to improve the number of babies receiving early colostrum. She always wants to provide better care and I can only marvel at the energy and dedication with which she achieves this.
Rosie is also a through-and-through team player. nothing is too much trouble and there’s no problem that can’t be fixed. She looks after her team in all kinds of ways and she also makes fantastic brownies and project manages team building events (3 peaks!) which all boosts team morale. I feel incredibly lucky to have Rosie as a colleague ”
Rosie is a true inspiration to everyone who comes into contact with her; whether that be families on the neonatal unit or colleagues across the whole MDT, both in her own unit and throughout the region.
Rosie has spent many hours of her own time making many hundreds of kangaroo care wraps that have been distributed throughout the region to support parents to have quality kangaroo care.
She has also been instrumental in organising unit social events and in particular organising an annual sponsored walk where members of the Exeter neonatal unit have undertaking challenges to raise money for organisations such as Alzheimer’s UK, a neonatal unit in South Africa where the funds have been used to develop a room to be able to provide kangaroo care and before newborns Vietnam.
Rosie’s enthusiasm, commitment and dedication to our speciality are clear to see and she is a true asset to our team here in Exeter. As part of her ongoing development she has completed an important project looking at discharge planning, and is in the process of taking this work forward with the aim of creating an improved discharge package of care with the ultimate aim of contributing to the development of an outreach service.
Kayla Howells
Works at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust
Kayla is the role model i would like to be! She goes way above and beyond her duties to make the best day for the babies and their families whilst on NNU. She is the biggest advocate for them.
If there’s something to celebrate Kayla will create a celebration for it and everyone is included.
Kayla reminds me of a puppy; she is so eager to learn new things, take the next step, and put herself up for any professional development. Chuck her a ball and she will return with it in a cuddle wrap!!
If you need to know anything, go and ask Kayla. If she doesn’t know, she will make sure she finds the answer or solution. All the junior team want Kayla as their buddy.
One day in the not too distant future, Kayla will make a fantastic ANNP.
I first met Kayla when she was born 10 weeks prematurely and, much like her beloved cousin Laura Warnock was, Kayla is 1 in a million.

Stacey is a really positive role model, even when she has a lot on her mind, she manages to give the babies 100%. Amy Postance
Works at Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust
Amy has became the new band 7 for the paediatric emergency department in Torbay. And while everyone regarded her highly as a paediatric nurse, I don’t think we could anticipate how she would excel in her new role.
Amy goes above and beyond for the whole team, but her passion is the department and making it the best it can be for the children. She is always advocating for what she believes is best for the patients and striving to develop the department on a daily basis.
Amy still shines when on a clinical shift, her care and compassion is often noted by patients and families. And she is an inspiration to all whom work with her.
We are so lucky to have Amy as our band 7 and the commitment she shows us. Thank you!

I have worked with Hannah on multiple occasions over the past 3 years of my training and now throughout my qualified position on the ward. Hannah has always been someone I’ve looked forward to working with, who has been incredibly supportive and helpful in guiding me in caring for acutely and critically unwell patients. Hannah’s kindness to patients and care especially for patients with autism or additional needs is incredible and a skill I aspire to possess myself. Hannah is always smiling and positive despite how busy the ward may be and is often in charge of the ward or working in HDU with the most unwell patients. I’m incredibly grateful that Hannah has always made me feel part of the nursing team and has been proactive in encouraging my independence with taking my own patients but always checking in and being supportive of my learning needs. Hannah has become an incredible role model for me to follow as a newly qualified nurse. Hannah is always looking to better the needs and care for patients and is a member alongside myself in the eating disorder action group looking to improve upon the care of patients with eating disorders. Lily Tregedeon
Works at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – EASTERN
Lily works in our ED and acts like she has been qualified much longer then she has! When she hands over a patient you can be certain that patient has received the best possible care. She is quite often seen in resus, where you can see she flourishes and whoever she looks after could not receive better care. This is particularly important for those coming to HDU and ensures the care recieved is seamless, as well as ensuring no patient is moved unless stable and had everything done. Lily supported me last year in an area where I had limited experience, her experience shone through and she stayed by my side and I cannot thank her enough as I felt so supported and looked after. As a result the best possible care was received. Its always a pleasure to see Lily on shift, she is a wonderful nurse and look forward to seeing her progress and the nurse she will one day become.
Michelle Tribble

Chelle! You are such a fantastic nurse, and I will forever be grateful for all your support. You take everything within your stride, and escalate cares when required. You have taken on such amazing training such as your APLS! You had to use your APLS skills very soon after, and I can never thank you enough for being by our side during a scary situation. I felt very reassured knowing you were there, and were able to support and guide the nursing team throughout.
As a HCA I love working with Chelle. She is very approachable. Chelle will always make time to ensure we have understood what is required, and if we aren’t sure Chelle will demonstrate. Chelle is always on hand to support the whole of her nursing team whether they be NQN, SHO or registar. Chelle demonstrates positive behaviour, and relationships with her patients, their families, and also her team mates.
Chelle is a brilliant nurse. She always gives high quality care to all her patients and advocates so well to ensure their needs are met to the best of her ability. She is kind, caring and approachable with patients and their families and they are always central to everything she does.
As a colleague Chelle is wonderful to work with. She is very supportive to other nurses, students and the wider disciplinary team. Chelle is always happy to offer advice or a listening ear and her ‘can do’ attitude’ is inspiring. Thank you for all your hard work Chelle and for being such a brilliant member of Team Bramble.

Nina has worked as our cardiac nurse for nearly 2 years. She also works in education. Nina often doubts herself but she really shouldn’t. Nina strives for excellence and this is such a fantastic attribute to have. She has become an integral part of our team and we really couldn’t do without her. She has really pushed herself this year to develop her role, support patients, develop clinical skills and new pathways. This should be commended. Nina takes great thought to her role and is very conscientious. I know she has been such a support to so many patients and families both at the beginning of their journey in paediatrics and at then end. She supports our physiologist brilliantly and also makes my life as a consultant so much easier – she has time for that personal touch, especially for patients which is so important. Nina is such a fantastic member of our team, her work is excellence, her attention to detail is fantastic and her dedication to the role and the patients is second to none. She works brilliants in a wider MDT especially with teaching and training colleagues, such as organising a respiratory nursing study day, which i know she enjoys. She is also about to take on supporting a group of neonatal nurses to develop a cardiac interest. I hope she takes great confidence from this as she really is doing such a great job. I can’t wait to support her development and confidence over the next few years.
