Well what can I say about Chris- what an absolute legend! Chris is one of our play specialists and is the absolute back bone of paediatrics in Torbay.
Chris is amazing at her job and is loved by staff, children and their families. She does always does everything she can to ensure children coming into hospital feel safe and happy.

Thank you Chris for always being amazing.
Cara Bennett
Works at Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital
Cara is an amazing and invaluable member of the Bramble team. She has worked for many years as a Play Specialist, and her skills, compassion, and caring nature have made a tremendous difference to the many children she has supported during their hospital journeys.
Cara works closely with patients, providing toys, activities, and creative play to make their stay in hospital brighter, more positive, and far less stressful. A huge part of her role involves providing distraction during procedures that can be frightening or overwhelming for children. Having worked alongside her for years, I have seen first hand the significant impact this has—her presence transforms challenging moments into manageable ones, creating a better experience for both children and their families.
She takes the time to truly get to know each child, understanding what works best for them and adapting her approach with patience and insight. Cara collaborates closely with the nursing team to help children overcome needle phobias and anxieties about the hospital environment, and it is wonderful to see these young patients develop confidence and trust over time with her support.
In addition to her work on the ward, Cara supports children in outpatients who need blood tests, including those with additional needs, ensuring they feel safe, understood, and cared for. She also works tirelessly to make the ward a brighter and more engaging place—decorating the environment, organising activities, and fundraising to improve the experience for everyone.
The children trust her deeply and genuinely look forward to seeing her when they come into hospital. Her dedication, creativity, and compassion have enriched Bramble Ward for many years, and she is truly deserving of recognition.
For all her hard work, commitment, and the countless young lives she has touched, I wholeheartedly nominate Cara for this award.
Tanya Burton
Works at Torbay & South Devon
Tanya is a huge support to the Louisa Cary team, always has a smile on her face & is a little ray of sunshine.
It is with great enthusiasm that I nominate Tanya for a PAFTA. Tanya is an invaluable member of not only the ward clerk team but our team as a whole, working across both the ward and assessment unit, where she consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that children and their families feel informed, welcomed, and cared for throughout their hospital journey.
Tanya demonstrates exceptional teamwork and dedication to her job every single day. She is the first to offer support to her colleagues – whether clinical, administrative, or managerial – and is often described as the “go-to” person by staff across the department. Her knowledge of systems, workflows, and people is unparalleled, and she generously shares this expertise to keep everything running smoothly, especially during busy or high-pressure periods.
She also exemplifies effective interaction across teams. Tanya seamlessly coordinates with nursing staff, doctors, allied health professionals, and external teams to ensure patients are booked appropriately, transfers are well-managed, and communication is never lost between departments. Her ability to connect people and information is instrumental to the smooth running of our services.
Most importantly, Tanya is a powerful advocate for children and their families. She takes the time to speak with worried, frustrated, and occasionally cross or rude parents, updates them on what’s happening, and ensures they feel heard and supported. Her empathy and dedication often transform what could be a stressful hospital visit into a more reassuring and humane experience.
Tanya is a vital member of our team – her presence lifts the team, improves patient experiences, and models exactly the kind of values we hope to uphold in paediatrics. She is truly deserving of this recognition
Wow what can I say! Tanya is amazing. Tanya is a ward clerk working on Louisa Cary and SSPAU at Torbay. She is the most hard working ward clerk I have met, not only does she fulfil her own work but goes above and beyond to support her ward clerk colleagues in their work to enable them and empower them by setting an excellent example and by answering their questions and teaching them all the skills needed even if she has to go over things many times. Not only is she a support to her admin colleagues but is a great support to her clinical colleagues to, she is has incredible intuition and is able to spot even the most subtle indication that someone is struggling and is always there with a listening ear or a cup of tea when needed. She is a wellbeing buddy and has recently expanded her wellbeing buddy tasks to supporting ‘wellbeing conversations’ a group session to allow dedicated time for all staff to come and talk. I don’t know what we would do without her excellent leadership skills and her caring nature, she is also a ‘right laugh’ and makes my shifts a whole lot better.
Every ward needs a ward clerk like Tanya – in fact we often end up having to share her with SSPAU!
She came into the role a little quiet and shy but has quickly gelled with the team, becoming a natural leader with a fantastic knowledge of the role and incredible attention to detail.
Even when her to-do list is becoming longer by the second, she never appears stressed and will still take a moment to help others with something, to speak to a parent or to make the nurses a cup of tea!
She always appears happy and cheerful, and loves to chat but somehow still manages to get the job done to a very high standard, even when distracted by lots of questions and jobs being asked of her.
Tanya will often work extra hours or cover gaps in the rota to ensure business continuity, consistently with a smile and “no problem!”. She ensures we always have the records we need, that notes are prepped and filed efficiently and quickly, we have plenty of labels, name bands, admission packs made up for incoming patients on SSPAU – in fact sometimes we joke she is too efficient because she’s filed the notes for return to storage before the nurses have had chance to write in them!
Not only is she brilliant at her job, she also makes the team feel valued and supported. She has wonderful interpersonal skills and is able to sense if any of the team aren’t quite themselves, and is always there with a cup of tea and a cuddle, willing to listen and do anything she can to help.
It is a genuine pleasure to nominate Tanya for the Non Clinical Staff Award. Tanya is truly at the heart of the department as the ward clerk on Louisa Cary and SSPAU — an exceptional professional who combines efficiency, empathy, and forward thinking in everything she does.
Tanya demonstrates excellence in her role every single day. She manages the fast-paced demands of the ward with calm capability, organisation, and a smile. Her ability to stay on top of busy workloads while maintaining accuracy and compassion sets a standard that inspires those around her.
She is incredibly supportive of her colleagues, always ready to help, guide, and encourage others. Tanya’s forward-thinking approach means she is often one step ahead — anticipating needs, finding solutions, and helping the team to work more effectively. Her positivity and proactive mindset keep the ward running smoothly, even in challenging circumstances.
Tanya truly embodies the values of the RCPCH — excellence, integrity, equity, partnership, and innovation. Her professionalism, kindness, and unwavering commitment to both families and the team make her an invaluable member of our service.
Tanya’s dedication and heart make her a truly deserving nominee for non-clinical staff award. The Play specialist team will be lucky to have her on their team.
Tanya is an exceptional ward clerk for paediatrics in Torbay. She is dedicated to her role and always has a smile on her face, making her an absolute pleasure to work with. She can solve any admin mystery from missing notes to wrong appointments and will go above and beyond to solve things to enable both the smooth running of the department and unfaltering ensuring the child and family have the safest and best care. Not only does she excel in her main role, she is also instrumental to the running of the Kidmed pill swallowing programme, working far beyond her role. Thank you Tanya- you are truly amazing!!

Hannah is one of our ward clerks on Polkerris Ward; she is incredibly helpful and utterly indispensable! No matter how busy the unit is, how many notes need sorting or how many times families are buzzing at the door, Hannah always maintains her calm, unflappable manner. She is ever ready to support the medical team with administrative tasks, even when these are not necessarily within her job role, but she will always endeavour to assist in whatever way she can. Her popularity with the team is demonstrated by the number of colleagues of all disciplines who will stop by her desk throughout the day. I hope she realises what an asset she is to the ward and what a difference it makes to our patients to be greeted by someone so friendly!
Hannah is an outstanding member of our team who consistently goes above and beyond in her role as ward clerk. She provides exceptional support to patients, families, and staff, and is known for her professionalism, warmth, and dedication.
Hannah treats everyone she encounters with fairness and respect, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment on the ward. Her friendly and compassionate approach is particularly important as she is often the first point of contact for children and families arriving at the hospital—many of whom are feeling anxious or overwhelmed. Her presence offers comfort and reassurance, making a significant difference to their overall experience.
Despite the demands of her administrative responsibilities, Hannah is always willing to assist in other areas. She frequently supports the nursing team during busy periods, helps with practical tasks such as cleaning beds, and ensures patients and carers have food and drinks when needed. Her ability to balance these responsibilities while keeping her core duties up to date is a testament to her strong work ethic and excellent time management.
In addition to her clerical duties, Hannah is currently completing her Health Care Support Worker (HCSW) competencies. When her administrative workload allows, she actively contributes to the wider team, further demonstrating her commitment to patient care and professional development.
Hannah consistently demonstrates pride in her work, shows initiative, and strives to improve both personally and professionally. She is open to feedback, regularly seeks ways to enhance her performance, and remains dedicated to delivering the highest standard of care and support.
Her contributions are invaluable, and it is no exaggeration to say that our ward would not function as effectively without her. Hannah is truly an asset to the team.

Katie is just amazing. Not only is she an incredible team lead she is also a wonderful person. She has been such a huge support to me and the allergy team this year, I can’t thank her enough for everything she does.
Neil Schofield
Works at North Devon District Hospital
Excellent manager for Women and Children’s Division. Hard working, efficient, accommodating, always cheerful!
Neil has led the paediatric department at North Devon for many years with dedication and commitment. He has an “open door” ( – actually shares his office with consultants and nurses – ) and is (almost) always available for big and small chats and discussions of issues, – unless he is caught up in e-meetings.
He works endlessly, and frequently leaves the office even after me. But Neil has not yet fully embraced the idea of looking after himself by not starting new jobs after 6 pm despite my attempts to teach him this concept.
Otherwise the wellbeing of individuals and the department is at the centre of his heart and work.( he has to look a bit more after his own life-work balance, as mentioned).
He is inventive when trying to find solutions to improve paediatric services with ‘higher’ management and amongst all staff groups.
He worked very hard on overturning prejudice and misunderstanding: The fact that millions of grockles come to North Devon for holidays and wellbeing has not yet filtered through to paediatric school or the RCPCH strategy papers – there remains a shortage of people appreciating this and combining the beautiful country- and water-side with a fulfilling career in a loavely paediatric department. The planned changes in the physical environment (NEW Hospital (ehmhm)) are also bearing his input, although they seem too long away – not your fault Neil!.
He is full of praise for what we achieve, even when I am downhearted and desperate to dump it on his desk.
Best of it: he shares my enthusiasm for cycling and there is always time for a good chat and moan! (weather, gadgets, car drivers, …..) or a grin about the latest gridlock in down town!
Best manager I worked with! – sorry that you had to go (partial retirement), but I hear you will be back to sell as ambient AI!
For giving his all to make a better service. He has been service manager not once but twice. He is the first in the office & the last to leave. He works hard to make the service better & never gives up working towards it. He is taking partial retirement & leave the service stronger.
For his work over years managing and supporting the NDDH paediatric and neonatal departments

She consistently goes above and beyond her role, offering a helping hand wherever needed, whether it’s assisting with administrative tasks, supporting clinical staff during busy periods, or simply being a calming, friendly presence for parents and loved ones.
What truly sets Millie apart is her unwavering kindness and empathy. She takes the time to get to know each family, remembering names and personal details that make people feel seen and valued. Her ability to comfort anxious parents with a few gentle words, a listening ear, or by going above and beyond is nothing short of extraordinary.
In recent times there have been frequent comments about how hard she has worked and how grateful we are for the work she does.
Her enthusiasm for her work is infectious, and her willingness to help—no matter the task—is an inspiration to the entire team. Millie is an integral part of the NICU, embodying the values of compassion, teamwork, and excellence in everything she does.
For her dedication to making the NICU a more welcoming, efficient, and caring place, I wholeheartedly nominate Millie for this PAFTA. She is truly deserving of recognition for the incredible difference she makes every single day.
