Nominated for Nursing Role Model of the Year
Works at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust
“Katie is the senior sister here in UHP.
She has an ‘open door’ ethos for both staff and parents on NICU and responds in real time to concerns raised. Her focus is on parental experience and has put processes in place to make the parental journey through NICU as bearable as possible including: supporting the bursary of £50/week for parents displaced from their booking unit due to their baby requiring NICU care, negotiating free parking, TV and Wi-Fi to ensure parents do not have the added financial stress when their baby is sick or preterm. Katie has led on the procurement of a purpose built ensuite 7 bedroom parental accommodation called ‘KEEP ME CLOSE’ (baby is close to parents and parents feel close to baby) in a building adjacent to UHP which was historically used for university students. She had to negotiate with local planning and involved MPs in the negotiations, thus raising the plight of parents of extreme preterm and sick newborn babies with the MPs involved. Katie is ‘a silent leader’. She does not shout out her achievements for the staff and parents in her care and just ‘gets on with her job’. She is FABULOUS!”
