Nominated for Nursing Role Model of the Year Award
Works at Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust
Dawn is the nursing lead for the short stay paediatric assessment unit (SSPAU) and is an absolute superstar. She is the actual embodiment of a role model for her peers. She consistently demonstrates professionalism, excellent clinical care, advocacy and empathy in every single shift. I always breathe a sigh of relief when Dawn is on shift because I know the children coming through SSPAU will have the best care.
She shows great initiative, always commencing care and treatment prior to medical review and will safely and competently escalate children for prompt review if needed. I trust her judgement implicitly and if she were to come to me to say she was worried about a child, I’d be reviewing that child within minutes.
She is compassionate in her care and communicates very kindly and effectively with children and their families. She ensures everyone is comfortable and If she’s not at the nursing desk she is probably making tea for the tired, stressed parents.
She is frequently found teaching not only the more junior members of the nursing team but also the junior medics too.
In addition to her clinical care she is responsible for the smooth running of both SSPAU and outpatients and this is no easy feat, especially when she only gets one management day a month!!
As if this wasn’t enough she is also currently contributing to service development, in particular improving SSPAU environment and the urgent and acute care of the child. She is also involved in a new project designed to teach children to swallow tablets,
Dawn is an all round superstar and is the most humble person you can meet. She absolutely deserves to know how much we all value her and is very deserving of this award.I’m nominating Dawn because she is an amazing sister who wholly supported me during the years I worked at Torbay Hospital. Dawn has a world of knowledge in her job. Dawn shows great compassion and caring to her fellow colleagues the children and their parents.
