Dr John-Paul Smith

Nominated for Consultant Hero Award

Works at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – EASTERN

John Paul communicates well with children and parents, in particular, he is always friendly, honest and appropriately reassuring. I have seen him be a team leader in a difficult situation and show compassion and empathy towards parents.

John Paul has been a particularly supportive consultant since I have started as an SHO. Following a difficult situation he shared with me how he has, over his career, developed his thought processes and how he deals with these types of events which I found extremely helpful.

He takes an interest in teaching and education of the juniors, volunteering to help at mock clinical exams.

It’s a real pleasure working with John-Paul. He always enjoys educating and helping out his colleagues as well as myself. John-Paul assisted me with helping a patient who was hospitalised due to their declining mental health. The way he approached and spoke with this particular patient brought a tear to my eye. He was so composed and collected as he spoke to this patient, assuring them that it’s acceptable to not feel okay and outlining ways that the team could support that patient. For the patients, families, and colleagues he works with, he goes above and beyond. Bringing a caring and compassionate approach within the team. John-Paul, you do a fantastic job at what you do!
