Dr James Hart

Nominated for Educational Supervisor of the Year

Works at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – EASTERN

Jim has a phenomenal breadth of experience as a generalist, meaning he is uniquely placed to teach trainees how to maintain a strong foundation and core skillset when making decisions for children and young people, no matter the complexity.

Under his supervision, trainees lead in the outpatient setting and he develops their clinic management skills – a rare trait in a supervisor. He always prioritises trainees’ education – teaching them how to provide optimal, MDT-focused care, providing feedback on consultation skills, and developing their written communication. He maintains a genuine interest in trainees’ understanding of first principles, and in my experience, this remains unparalleled from any other supervisor I’ve had in my ten-year career. Whether related to direct clinical queries, trainees’ understanding of a broader topic, or when discussing academic literature, he always actively encourages trainees to question the work we do, why we are doing it, and how to do it better. As educational supervisor, he is responsible for providing positive and constructive feedback, which has always been delivered with clarity, encouragement, and action points for development.

He co-publishes original research and review articles with trainees, and co-delivers teaching/journal club presentations internationally. His thirst and encouragement for evidence-based decision making is an asset to his supervisory ability. He always supports trainees with professional applications and assessments to a high standard. As a direct result of him helping me prepare for my subspecialty interview, I ranked second nationally. He has been, and will continue to be, an outstanding educational supervisor.
