Paediatric Emergency Department

Nominated for Team of the Year

University Hospitals Plymouth

“””The team at ED Paeds Derriford work under constant pressure and yet can all still smile. They have a fantastic team spirit and always look out for each other. Their skills for spotting sick children and caring for them are exemplary. Working in the ED arena at the moment is particularly draining, the protracted wait times, the volume of patients and lack of medical staff is tiring both physically and emotionally yet the Paeds ED team never let that get in the way of ensuring the sickest children get the critical care they need urgently.

Often the staff are found helping the adult nurses in the ambulatory area with triage, bloods, ECGs and obs. The team regularly pull the 16 and 17 year olds from the adult queue and deal with them in the paediatric area, even if that often means they are there for 24hrs +. This year they have had to continue to manage COVID and all the various changes that has brought, they have also handled a brand new paperless computer system which they have achieved with ease. They are definitely an amazing team.””

I nominate my team because paeds ED is a very challenging and high pressured environment to work and I feel that every person working in the department deserve recognition for all of their patient advocacy and hard work. Every member of the team strive to do what is best for each individual patient and will do their upmost to ensure that the patient receives the best possible care. The team are very supportive of each other and I am proud to work with them 😊
This team is wonderful to work in and I couldn’t be prouder of the team we have become. The care provided is of a good standard and this is fed back to us. Shifts are always busy and can be hard but this does not stop each and every person being truly amazing. Passion from everyone always shines through and this is felt by the children and families we see. Let’s keep on growing and delivering the best care we do

For their amazing teamwork this year after a lot of tough situations and really poorly children. The dedication of the team to keep the child and their family at the centre of everything they do. The best thing about working in Paediatric ED is the amazing colleagues I get the pleasure of working with everyday.
ED can be the best and worst at the same time and on each shift you experience a wealth of different emotions. This means that sometimes you go home feeling a little lost and others, on top of the world. But no matter what you are facing there is always someone at the end of the phone or willing to chat no matter what is happening around them. You, as part of this team, is each and every other team members priority. We all fiercely advocate for our patients and strive to meet all of their needs and I am incredibly proud of what we achieve on a day-to-day basis, even with the limitations and challenges that we face in the department. I know that our team is incredible, full of knowledge, passion and drive and it is amazing to be part of the Paeds ED family.
Throughout the immense pressure and current state of the NHS. Paeds ED always strive to ensure each and every patient receives excellent and safe care. The team consists of fantastic nurses who always make the children their priority. When understaffed and over run, the team constantly advocates for the children and demonstrates exceptional team working.”
