Like so many hospitals, the RDE has seen a worrying, massive increase in the number of young adults, and often children, with an eating disorder (ED). The resourcing and emotional pressures this has brought those involved in the care of these patients has been startling, increasing the need to address these issues to provide the best possible outcomes for patients and to retain dedicated staff. As a result, we have seen a swift increase in our MDT ED team, consisting of a broad skill mix of nursing staff, consultants, psychiatrists, dieticians, outreach workers, the CAMHS team & our security team. The inpatient service employed more HCAs, some of whom have never worked in the role, all of whom (new and existing) have embraced the new learning, and shown dedication and compassion in challenging circumstances.

The impact of this newly enhanced team has been to seek to understand and address the needs of all staff on Bramble, provide teaching packages & latest evidence for staff, to evaluate and alter protocols, provide individualised plans for our young people and to help us to adopt new ways of working with hands on and practical support. The results of this dedicated service are in their infancy and yet it has been exceptionally encouraging to see how our paediatric leaders have truly listened, observed and implemented a solution to our increasing challenges, which has begun to enhance the care of these patients.

I certainly appreciate all the efforts being made by the ED team, both on Bramble and behind the scenes, to ensure the journey towards feeling well for our patients is as effective and sensitive as possible. ”
