Works at Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust
Maria has been in the NHS for an amazing 41 years, the entirety of her nursing career. During her general training as a student she experienced all specialities including working with children. In those days you specialised after you had completed your general training. Maria started on Louisa Cary Ward in 1980 as a Newly Qualified State Registered Nurse. This was her first Staff Nurse post and 38 years later she is still working on Louisa Cary Ward. Maria is a born leader and has made countless contributions to make Louisa Cary what it is today.
She is everything a nurse should be in this role. She continues to show staff what it means to feel supported by being compassionate, hardworking, knowledgeable, and dependable. She is always willing to go the extra mile for patients and staff members. Maria is the person you want by your side when times become challenging, you always feel safe when Maria is on duty as she has such a calming influence. Her work is detail-oriented, meticulous and well organised. However, Maria is never seen on the ward on a Thursday afternoon as this is the day she always has her roast chicken dinner!
We are honoured to have had the opportunity to learn from Maria and look to her as a role model for what she inspires us to be in the future.
