North Devon District Hospital
“They care for each patient whether is a 1 day old baby or a 17 year patient with a high standards of care and treat each patient with dignity, showing compassion and sensitivity and provide care that treats all patients as equals.
There is evidence of effective multidisciplinary team working with ITU, emergency department and WATCh and this is fed back through debriefs and emails, always with positive comments for all the nurse that work in PHDU. Throughout the team there is evidence of every member of staff encouraging other, such as supporting junior staff nurses to work in HDU and always giving positive and constructive feedback where necessary.
The ward is a lot smaller than others, but the care delivery and the team spirit is outstanding. Being so far away from other centres we deal with a lot of crisis situations for a while until support comes with the population doubling in the summer months putting more pressure on the ward. Staff work up and beyond to cover the ward and shifts. The patients always comment on how friendly the ward is and comforting. The team always pulls together including the ward clerk and domestics to provide outstanding care delivery.
Caroline Thorpe may be a small ward but what it lacks in size it makes up for in enthusiasm, we love what we do and work hard to provide exemplary care to the children and young people of North Devon. “
