Kerry Matthews

Nominated for Nursing Role Model of the Year

Works at Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust

“I have been fortunate enough to work with kerry for 16 years. For a period of that time we shared the responsibilities of a Practice Educator role, which gave us the opportunity to build a close working relationship and friendship. Kerry has continued with the education role and has remained a supportive, knowledgeable, approachable and enthusiastic resource link, providing training, education and teaching in order to make the Bramble Nursing Team, the best that they can be.

Kerry has remained a visible face throughout the Covid pandemic, ensuring training needs continue to be met in. In order for colleagues to remain up to date on all the implemented changes required to keep staff patients and their families safe, Kerry has been on the frontline, dealing with daily challenges and actioning tasks. Kerry has taken on these extra duties on top of her normal education workload. She is always finding ways to make colleagues life’s easier and for them to better understand what is expected of them.

Kerry balances her Practice Educator role, with working clinically on the ward. Meaning that she is juggling the demands of 2 roles simultaneously. Kerry appears to do this with ease and confidence, in a professional manner, which has earnt her great respect and admiration from her peers.

As well as the education and training needs of the nursing staff, Kerry also supports students, whilst on placement. The ward consistently receives high recognition and praise from students and they are always enthusiastic to return. This in part is due to the hard work and dedication of Kerry. She spends a great deal of time preparing for their placements, taking into account individual needs and ensures that they get the most out of their placement, in order to achieve their full potential and gain transferable skills and knowledge.

Kerry is always quick to respond to a query and happy to help and signpost, with a smile and a welcoming greet. Kerry prides herself in being part of the team and will seek out those in need of support and guidance. She will do what she can to improve their understanding or enhance their work life. Kerry is always keen to fulfil her role and improve upon her knowledge in order to feedback to the team. “
